Polyurethanes, extremely versatile materials, may present biocompatibility and be found as elastomers, fibers and foams. In the coating industry, polyurethanes may be used as protecting coatings for substrates such as steel, concrete, plastics, metals, paper, leather and wood. The research and development of aqueous systems has been growing due to the world-wide movement for restriction of volatile organic compounds (VOC) emission. In this work, the latest advances in the field of polyurethane coatings have been reviewed.
