Essential Features of the Catholic Notion of Revelation

ABSTRACT

In the last one and a half century, Catholic theological reflection on revelation has undergone an exponential development. Today, however, it still faces issues that need to be dealt with: 1) a proper expression of the originality of Christian revelation along with 2) a definitive abandonment of the exclusivist approach that rejects any authenticity outside its boundaries; 3) a departure from the traditional Natural–Supernatural pair, which is hampered by the major handicap of conceiving certain things as pure Nature; 4) an understanding of Christian revelation in conjunction with other religions. This article stands in continuity with Latin American Catholic theology. It presents five topics (along with their respective justifications) that form part of a Catholic notion of revelation that deals with the above-mentioned issues. These topics are limited to the revelation that takes place in this world prior to death. The topic of postmortem divine revelation is not discussed.
