Technological revolutions and subjective transformations

Many psychologists find it hard to believe that the new digital technologies, and mainly the Internet, may be transforming the subjective organization of contemporary men and women. Ironically, these psychologists admit that the subjective organization characteristic of the 19th and 20th centuries - that of the individual - emerged as a result of similar changes introduced by the Industrial Revolution. For this reason, the present paper analyzes the aspects that the Information Technology Revolution and the Industrial Revolution have in common. It focuses on the human consequences of both in order to show that some technologies can cause deep subjective transformations, whose understanding is fundamental to psychology.
