In this paper, it will be examined Freud's generalization in Project for scientific psychology of Breuer's affective representation concept presented in Studies on Hysteria (1895). More important than to showing that Freud adopts Breuer's concept of affective representation, it aims to examine how Freud generalizes this concept from a exclusively pathological context to normal psychic functioning context, in order to explain the defense mechanisms.
