Meanings Attributed by Psychologists about Harm Reduction

Abstract

The psychologist is a professional who has been present in public policies aimed at drug users. These policies had been indicating Harm Reduction as a principle of care. However, since its introduction as a guideline, it has been the result of mistakes and resistance. This exploratory study of a qualitative methodology aimed to understand the meanings attributed by psychologists about Harm Reduction, analyzing the repercussions on their practices. The data from interviews show that Harm Reduction has been taken in a reductionist way as a strategy for reducing use and against abstinence. It is concluded that this simplification of the Harm Reduction proposal shows the need to expand this discussion in the field of Psychology and society.
