Transcultural adaptation and validation of factors within absenteeism

Abstract

The complex phenomenon known as labor absenteeism is characterized by the absence of an employee from his or her work duties. Despite the importance of this theme, given the possible impact it may have on productivity and costs of an organization, no validated instruments on labor absenteeism were found for the Brazilian population. The objective of the present work was to conduct a transcultural adaptation and validation of a labor absenteeism scale. The work consisted of two studies. The first focused on achieving a semantic adaptation of the original instrument to Brazilian Portuguese and exploratory factor analysis. In the second study a confirmatory factor analysis was performed based on the results of the first study. The results confirmed the validity of the adapted instrument, which presented itself as unifactorial, with very satisfactory precision (α = 0.91). The results are discussed based on the theoretical conceptions of the construct, the possibility of its use in diagnostic and academic research, and the limitations of the studies.
