“Everyone here is treated the way they deserve”: generalized suspicion and naturalization of the deprivation of liberty of black youth

Abstract

The goal of this article is to analyze how racism is daily produced in the implementation of the juvenile detention system in the state of Rio de Janeiro. Based on interviews with professionals who work in detention centers for adolescents considered “in conflict with the law”, we observe the mobilization of racialized stereotypes that are not seen as such, although these justify the centrality of security procedures over educational activities. By observing processes of generalized suspicion and naturalization of racial penal selectivity, it will be possible to verify a codified racism that is easily denied and, therefore, silenced.
