THE RESIDENTIAL COLLEGES AS SPACES FOR THE MODERNIZATION OF SPANISH HIGHER EDUCATION DURING THE 1960S: THE CASE OF THE CASA DO BRAZIL RESIDENTIAL COLLEGE

ABSTRACT

This paper focused on international influences as a key variable to study the educational and curricular practices developed in Spain from the 1950s onward. Its main objective was to analyze the foundation and development of the Residential College Casa do Brasil (Colegio Mayor Universitário Casa do Brasil), located in Madrid, in the context of modernization of Spanish Higher Education, and its relations with the European and Latin American context. The research was based on original and unpublished documentation, such as: the first statute and regulations, the memories and reports of the academic courses implemented, and the events and cultural activities promoted during the 1960s. Casa do Brasil played a role that, in addition to providing residence for Brazilian university students, promoted the dissemination of Brazil in Spain, as well as the reception of cultures originated in other countries, particularly from Latin America and the Iberian Peninsula - Spain and Portugal -, through internal and public events held weekly.
