The CNPq synchrocyclotron: from conception to abandon

Following the results obtained by César Lattes and the possibilities of improvements in particle physics research in Brazil, the Conselho Nacional de Pesquisas (CNPq) acquired, in 1952, a small synchrocyclotron from the University of Chicago (a model of the 450 MeV machine). At the beginning, a team from the Centro Brasileiro de Pesquisas Físicas (CBPF) was put in charge of the installation and operation of the equipment, but in 1954 the team in charge was dispersed and the installation discontinued. The remounting of the equipment was performed from 1958 to 1962 by a team from the Centro de Pesquisas Físicas (CPF) of the Universidade do Rio Grande do Sul, through an agreement between this university and CNPq. The report of this remounting is presented in this paper following the dossier prepared by Gerard Hepp, head of the CPF team.
