Is the thin-lens approximation always valid in experiments for focal distance determination?

In this work we discuss the validity of the thin-lens approximation in experiments for focal distance determination. We use the matrix formalism for the study of ray trajectories through a thick lens system and introduce the concept of principal planes. It is shown that for a typical lens used in the undergraduate laboratory at the University of São Paulo Physics Institute, the thin lens approximation is not valid.
