São Paulo macro-metropolis: socio-occupational structure and typology of its municipalities. Changes in the first decade of the 2000th years

Abstract

The paper proposes the analysis of the structure of the São Paulo macro-metropolis and the effects of its socio-spatial inequalities in the State of São Paulo urban-regional dynamics. This region, defined by Emplasa in 2012, is formed by 174 municipalities comprising 5 metropolitan regions, 2 urban agglomerations and a micro region. The theoretical basis for this study starts from the concept of city region, proposed and discussed by authors such as Soja, Sassen, Scott, Lencioni among others. Considering the region as a product of processes of productive restructuring, economic reconversion and specialization of an intensely articulated network of cities, the paper also proposes the following questions for reflection: Is it pertinent, from the theoretical point of view, the concept of city region for the study of the macrometropolis of São Paulo? What forms of economic and social organization are there and what are their current dynamics? What kinds of spatialities emerge in this changing macro region?
