Vitamins antioxidant in Parkinson's Disease

ABSTRACT

The Parkinson's Disease is a neuro-degenerative illness characterized by the presence of rigidity, tremor and bradykinesia, and is one of the most common impairments of movement among the elderly population. Studies showed that the oxidative stress, the long use of the drug levodopa to treat this illness, and the increase of plasma concentration of homocysteine aggravate the symptoms. Many nutrients are being researched both for prevention and to treat the illness, and amongst them the antioxidant vitamins stand out. Recently, there has been an increase in the number of research on the action of these vitamins to attenuate the damages in these patients’ brains. So this paper aimed to join scientific literature, recent information on the influence of C, E, B6, B12 vitamins and folate in the Parkinson's disease. Although evidences of the effect of such vitamins in ill patients have been confirmed by some research works, still there are controversies among authors, and additional studies on the subject become necessary.
