In times of ‘nascent fermentation’: a reading of the projects for the primary public education of François Guizot (1832-1836)

Abstract: In this article we will investigate the projects of the character François Guizot for the topic of primary public education as French minister of public education. To this end, we will analyze the law of June 28, 1833 - the first great law exclusively related to French primary education - and the enactment of a series of legislative measures aimed at ensuring the application of what would become known as the Guizot law. Our main thesis will be that the constitution of the new legislation was part of a political project for the construction of the centralizing and instructive French monarchist state. This state that, in the very act of forging itself, perceived the primary school space as strategic in order to put into practice the ideas forged by Francois Guizot for the gouvernement des esprits.
