“A great worker of the future civilization of the people of the Amazon”: José Veríssimo (1857-1916) and the Collegio Americano (1881-1890)

Abstract

This article analyzes the educational experience of José Veríssimo at the “Collegio Americano”, between 1881 and 1890. It seeks to understand the pedagogical innovations carried out by Veríssimo within the political debate between the imperial tradition and scientific policy. In the name of modern education, such innovations provoked intense debates about their legitimacy in the public opinion of Pará. Based on documentary and bibliographical research, I consider that Veríssimo's educational experience took on political consequences due to his reformist assumptions of the 1870 Generation. It appears that the “Collegio Americano” represented a space for the organization of culture by defending a modern, secular education, scientific in the civil society of Pará in the 19th century, which was evidenced in the “Veríssimo Saraiva Question”.
