Production, circulation and reading and writing method in Cartilha da infância by Thomaz Galhardo

Abstract:

The article proposes to analyze Thomaz Galhardo's Cartilha da infância, paying attention to the aspects of production, editing, circulation and literacy method proposed in this book that was edited from the 19th century to the end of the 20th century, reaching more than one hundred years of existence edition. The analysis is the result of a research on the history of school editions, in which we reconstruct the trajectory of a long-term booklet, written by a primary school teacher from São Paulo who was part of a generation of textbook authors of the period that became known for editorial success of this work, responsible for the literacy of several generations of Brazilians. This booklet reveals the permanence of a school tradition sustained by the author's choice of the syllabic method for teaching reading and writing.
