The school material culture in the public institutions of primary education in Maranhão (1843-1870)

Abstract

This article analyzes the material culture in primary education establishments in Maranhão (1843-1870), the respective conditions and the actions of public education agents. There is a two-way relationship between instruments and objects used, school books and available furniture, with the configuration of said establishments according to pedagogical pratices. Bibliographical and documentary research is based on the theoretical-methodological assumptions of cultural history, examining the discourses (via representations) on political/ideological positions and differentiated school practices. It is concluded that even with budgetary limitations and management intermittence, initiatives were developed aiming at the development of education in Maranhão Império.
