An intellectual of Catholic Action in the educational field: Alceu Amoroso Lima in A Patron’s Speech (1935)

Abstract

This paper aims to interpret cultural and symbolic elements expressed by the Catholic intellectual Alceu Amoroso Lima (1893-1983) in a patron’s speech. We analyzed the transcription of the speech he addressed to the students finishing their course at the Colégio Sacré-Coeur de Marie - RJ, published in 1935, in Vida: revista universitária, with the title “A Patron’s Speech”. In the present study concepts developed by the French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu were used as categories of analysis. At the ceremony Amoroso Lima sought to modulate expectations and intended to impact the dispositions incorporated by the students, by defending the work with the Brazilian Catholic Action as a good path for the girls.
