Open-access Evaluation in Estimating of Daily and Ten-Day Reference Evapotranspiration in the Climatic Conditions in the State of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil

This study aimed to evaluate the performance of methods for estimating reference evapotranspiration (ETo) on daily and ten-day period in seven cities in Rio Grande do Sul. Daily meteorological data from January 2015 to December 2020 were used to estimate ETo by Penman-Monteith as standard and for 32 methods to be evaluated using six indicators (confidence and concordance indexes, correlation and determination coefficients, mean squared error and mean error). The radiation-based methods of Ritchie, Stephens-Stew, Souza-Silva, Valiantzas-3 and Hargreaves are recommended in all cities to estimate daily and ten-day ETo. Based on the confidence index, all had an ‘excellent’ performance and presented a variation in the estimate of less than 1 mm and a tendency to underestimate the ETo. In the absence of radiation data, it is possible to estimate daily ETo using some methods based on air temperature, such as Romanenko, only for the city of Bagé. On the ten-day period, one can use the Brockamp aerodynamic method in the cities of Bagé and Rio Grande and the temperature-based methods of Hargreaves-Samani 1 and 2 and Baier-Rob in all cities, except Santa Rosa.
