BRIEF COMMUNICATION Voice handicap in undergraduate speech-language-hearing students: Exploring its correlation with shyness Hassem, Lara Marins, Isabella Ruas, Ana Frota, Silvana Dornelas, Rodrigo Abstract in Portuguese: RESUMO Objetivo: analisar a relação entre a autopercepção da desvantagem vocal e o grau de timidez em estudantes universitários. Abstract in English: ABSTRACT Purpose: to analyze the correlation between self-perception of voice handicap and the degree of shyness in university students. Methods: an observational cross-sectional study including students over 18 years old enrolled in the speech-language-hearing program at a public university. Participants were invited to answer an online form, which included an identification form with questions on gender, age, and education, the Check and Buss Shyness Scale, and the reduced Voice Handicap Index (VHI-10). ORIGINAL ARTICLES The neural encoding of speech sounds in children with speech sound disorders: Analysis of Frequency-Following Response Barrozo, Tatiane Faria Silva, Liliane Aparecida Fagundes Matas, Carla Gentile Wertzner, Haydée Fiszbein Abstract in English: ABSTRACT Purpose: to analyze neural encoding of speech sounds by Frequency-following response (FFR) and verify whether there are variations in idiopathic speech sound disorder (SSD), according to symptom severity. Methods: twenty-nine children with SSD between 5:0 and 7:11 years old underwent FFR assessment, using the /da/ syllable, and the V, A, C, D, E, F, and O waves were identified and analyzed. The children were divided into three groups according to SSD severity, calculated by the percent correct consonants (PCC) index. The relation between SSD severity and the latency of each wave and VA slope was analyzed, using inferential analysis, with p<0.05 considered significant. Results: twenty-six patients (89.66%) presented alteration in at least one of the FFR components, mainly with delayed latencies of the A, F, and O waves and smaller VA slope. Longer O wave latency for the severe group than for the mild or moderate group, was observed, the latency of this wave being related to the PCC-revised. Conclusion: individuals presented with SSD had difficulty in the neural processing of speech sounds, especially for processing the final portion of phonemes. Furthermore, the more evident the severity of the SSD, the longer the neural processing time required to perceive the offset of syllabic voice. |

Abstract in English: ABSTRACT Purpose: to identify and describe wearable electronic devices used for monitoring mastication and swallowing in adults. Methods: two independent researchers searched the PubMed and MEDLINE engines via Ovid®. Primary studies were selected using Rayyan®, with analysis of titles, abstracts, and full texts. The information extracted followed a study protocol. Literature Review: 243 studies, of which 25 were selected for analysis after applying the inclusion and exclusion criteria, were identified. Data about the participants, devices, sensors, location, and analyses performed, were extracted. Conclusions: wearable devices for monitoring mastication have been used primarily in healthy adults, assessing the number of bites, cycles per bite and per meal, and mastication speed, rate, and time. For swallowing, these devices have been applied to both healthy adults and individuals with dysphagia, focusing on detecting swallowing activities and differentiating them from other muscle activities. However, there is a gap in the development of devices that fully integrate the phases of ingestion, processing, and swallowing, with greater clinical support to improve monitoring and application in different health conditions. |
