Human rights and the justice system in land conflicts in western Amazonia

Abstract

Land conflicts in western Amazonia have increased considerably in recent years - especially in states such as Rondônia, where the country's highest number of deaths occur in Brazil. To understand the historical-normative scenario of the problem, we will analyze the performance of the institutions of the justice system to evaluate their participation in the intensification of these conflicts. Our findings demonstrate that human rights violations in the struggle for land in the Amazon tend to increase as the complexity of the situation continues to be ignored by the State, to the detriment of workers and small farmers living permanently under constant threat.
