Democracy, friendship, serenity: Aristotle among Vaz, Weil and Bobbio

Abstract

The article proposes a dialogue between three contemporary thinkers in the field of political philosophy on the concept of democracy, Lima Vaz (1921-2002), Eric Weil (1904-1977) and Norberto Bobbio (1909-2004), confronted with the Aristotelian conception of political friendship sustained by benevolence (eúnoia) and concord (homónoia) among all citizens. The final reflection on serenity, defined by Bobbio as the “most impolite of virtues”, inscribes this article as a tribute to Antonio José Romera Valverde for his long and fruitful academic career.
