VISUAL CULTURE AND MONEY FORGERY: THE TRAJECTORY OF THE PHOTOGRAPHER VICTOR TELLES - 1861-1906

Abstract

This article discusses money forgery by addressing the personal trajectory of one of its main icons in the nineteenth century: the photographer Victor Telles. To do so, I begin by outlining an analysis of the photographer’s personal trajectory, who was born Portuguese and naturalized Brazilian, and his involvement in several charges of forgery both in Brazil and Portugal at the end of the nineteenth century. I aim to understand the implications of Victor Telles in the forgery crime, focusing on the prevailing visual culture at that time, as well as the photographic practices in the same context.
