Edition of autograph letter by Diogo da Sylveyra Vellozo to the governor of the captaincy of Pernambuco, Henrique Luiz Pereyra Freyre

ABSTRACT

The article presents a conservative edition and a brief philological study of an unpublished letter by Diogo da Sylveyra Vellozo addressed to the governor of the captaincy of Pernambuco, Henrique Luiz Pereyra Freyre, dated October 14th, 1738, from Recife. The letter provides clues about the transport dynamics in the captaincy and, mainly, about the use of different types of wood being exploited in the region. Belonging to the Alberto Lamego Collection, safeguarded by the IEB Archive, the letter was selected as a study object by José Heleno Barbosa, a dedicated student to whom we pay posthumous tribute in this text.
