Mário de Andrade, Alfredo Mesquita and modern theatre

This article discusses relations between theatre and modernism as it investigates the movement’s main character: Mário de Andrade. As the research into this subject shows, he did not follow closely the work that was being done by professional theatre in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, perhaps because he considered it was far from the modernity established by the Modernist of 1922. On the other hand, Mário de Andrade collaborated with an amateur and modern initiative: the staging of the play Noite de São Paulo, by Alfredo Mesquita, in 1936, writing a text for its program - herein transcribed - and participating of the organizing committee of the theatrical show.
