ABSTRACT

Members of family Leguminosae are important floristic elements of the vegetational formations of the Brazilian Pantanal. Machaerium is an important tropical genus of Papilionoideae and its species are found in different vegetation formations, being indicated for recovery of degraded areas. The genus Machaerium is represented in the Pantanal by eight species: M. aculeatum, M. acutifolium, M. amplum, M. eriocarpum, M. hirtum, M. isadelphum, M. paraguariense and M. villosum. This study presents identification key, descriptions, comments, illustrations, habitat information and geographic distribution of each taxon The species occur in the deciduous forest, semideciduous forest, aluvial dense forest (gallery forest), savanna (cerrado), forested savanna (cerradão) and forested savanna (chaco), distributed through the ten subregions defined within the Pantanal.
