LABOR REFORM, PANDEMIC AND IMPLICATIONS FOR WOMEN

Abstract

This article discusses the results of the research project Labor reform in Brazil and consequences for women , developed in 2019 and 2020 and funded by the Latin American Council of Social Sciences, which used data on the labor market, collective agreements and interviews with union members and workers from the metallurgical, chemical, toys and musical instruments, clothing, banking, commerce and services, health, education economic sectors and domestic work. It hypothesized that by disregarding gender inequalities in the labor market, the reform would affect women more intensely — which was confirmed. Results showed that impacts of the reform intertwined with those of the pandemic causing job insecurity, precarization and intensification. The study thus reveals the dramatic impacts of labor reform and the pandemic on women, focusing the debate on the crisis of care and social reproduction under neoliberalism and highlighting how it is deepening with the intersection of reform and the pandemic, further hindering social reproduction.
