Abstract

The article seeks to evaluate the Brazilian Modern Art Week and Independence. Even more, it seeks to freely explore the relations between both events in a perspective that can already be considered as long-term. For this evaluation, the material used is especially works of Brazilian political and social thought. We try specially to start to develop an interpretation of Modernism that emphasizes its democratic character, what contrasts with the prevailing view about the movement. Besides, to strengthen the argument, is mobilized a certain interpretation about Independence, identified with Caio Prado Jr. and Florestan Fernandes, that highlights the democratic deficiencies of 1822, which mark the country since then. In an opposite sense, we relate it to the democratic character of 1922.
