Unemployment, family, and social reproduction among professionals with university degree

Abstract

This article analyzes interviews with law graduates who had attended the Bahia Magistrates School (Emab). The research addresses the conditions of existence and the role of families in socializing the risks of unemployment. From a contact list sent by Emab, 21 interviews were realized in 2019, configuring a contrast-saturation sample. After being transcribed, the interviews were coded and grouped into thematic axes. Unemployment experiences intersect three aspects: i. the composition of a competitive professional field, whose ways of looking for work depend on long-term family investments; ii. a normative elaboration of the biographies, based on the idea that each stage of the trajectories is associated with investments in educational institutions and in the labor market; and iii. the socioeconomic position of family arrangements defines unemployment as a safe experience and subject to the idea of a professional career.
