Open-access Comfort, social protection and domestic employment (Brazil and Fluminense Region, 1960-2000)

Abstract

This article deals with the women's history, without losing sight of the relations between the public and the private spheres. It examines the domestic work and job in contemporary Brazil, and it takes them in their main function: to provide comfort and social protection in the houses, which has been a long term regularity historically speaking. It contains reviews of concepts related to this subject, based on the experiences of domestic maids in the metropolitan region of Rio de Janeiro, from the twentieth century's sixties to the current days, as well as on journalistic and TV reporting from the present time.
