Open-access The construction of the corporatist system in Portugal (1933-1974)

In this article, we present some of the results of recent research on the corporatist system established in Portugal during the Estado Novo regime (1933-1974). A new database allows, for the first time, to carry out more detailed analysis of the chronological, geographical and functional distribution of the thousands of organisms that shaped the Portuguese corporatist system. It is observing that, contrary to what has been stated in several studies, the system did not arise in a casuistic or disordered way. In fact, the dense network of organisms was built on criteria consistent with the political objectives of each phase of the regime. Identifying the territorial, political and social impacts of the corporatist network is essential to deepen the explanations about the performance and longevity of the dictatorship.
