The invisible landscape: in search of the “serra do Roncador”

Abstract:

This article analyses representations of the serra do Roncador and related themes in Brazilian cultural production in the 1920s and 1930s, seeking to demonstrate the validity of myths related to that environment and their connection with the process of national advancement towards territories still little known. To this end, the intersection of mythical narratives with strategies of conquest and appropriation of nature is discussed, establishing a dialogue with literature and the press. From these literary and journalistic sources, it is possible to observe the recurrence of themes that demonstrate the conversion of the natural environment into a universe of representations that encompass mystical beliefs, legendary narratives, contemporary mysteries. At issue is the deepening of the incorporation of the nature of Central Brazil and Amazonia in the imaginary of modernity.
