The dangers of gluttony in Castilian and Portuguese treaties (14th and 15th centuries)

Abstract:

The purpose of the text is to analyze the prescriptions given to Christians about the dangers of gluttony in the writings, written in Latin or in the vernacular, which circulated in Castile and Portugal in the 14th and 15th centuries. In this sense, the study examines how the most appropriate means to prepare their food or perform the job of a cook were disclosed to Castilian and Portuguese Christians, through criticism and teachings present above all in confession and moral treaties, without harming bodily health and the salvation of the soul. The objective is to understand how these writings accompanied the transformations in the ways of eating and proposed ways to avoid harm to the body and soul from this necessity.
