Open-access The military world as a political arena: conflicts and disputes for rights in the Regiment of Pardos Men of Rio de Janeiro, 1805 1

The purpose of this article is to examine a specific episode - an act of insubordination of two captains of the Rio de Janeiro Regiment of Pardos (mixed blood) Men - as an expression of a great daily tension of disputes and redefinitions of social hierarchies at the turn of the nineteenth century. This tension is produced by the growth of the black population of the city, whether it be slaves or free and freed, which imposed a discussion on possible mechanisms - political and institutional - to insert it into society.
