Resistance to gags: history and combat against oppression in the literature of Assis Brasil

ABSTRACT

The literature produced by the writer Francisco de Assis de Almeida Brasil is plural in its styles and themes, presenting several social, cultural and historical traits, and reaching different audiences and readers as well. Thus, this article aims at analyzing the viewpoint of his writing, with symbologies and representations, regarding the Brazilian Military Regime, especially in his book “Os que bebem como os cães”, published in the midst of the dictatorial period, in 1975. Methodologically, this study provides an analytical-interpretative reading of his literature, particularly of the aforementioned book, by linking it to the historical and historiographical discussion about the relations between History and Literature, with emphasis on the social and historical interstice of the Brazilian Military Regime. Therefore, the book of Assis Brasil is taken as a discourse that (re)creates reality, on thresholds between the historical and fictional narrative, presenting at the same time registration, complaint and reflection bias.
