Classified Brasília: new spaces of middle classes in the federal capital of Brazil

Abstract

This article aims to consider aspects of “city making” (Agier, 2015) from the establishment of residential areas for members of the middle strata in Brasília. We begin with a discussion about the history of proposition and residential occupation of the Pilot Plan and discuss two experiences of anthropological fieldwork carried out in recent years, notably in the horizontal condominiums established at the beginning of this century and in the recently settled Northwest Sector, whose constructions were made possible by the Territorial Master Plan approved in 2009. The central argument is that, in its consolidation and expansion process, the “new capital” of Brazil has been increasingly characterized by the class condition of its inhabitants, in a process that we call classification of space.
