A aparição do demônio, várias vezes, durante uma semana, em uma grande fábrica do subúrbio da cidade de São Paulo, em 1956, foi uma indicação de que os fenômenos de demonização podem ocorrer também fora do mundo tradicional e rural dos camponeses. Também os operários da moderna indústria estão sujeitos à invocação do imaginário arcaico para compreender as mudanças tecnológicas na produção. Quando a modernização industrial introduz uma separação radical entre o pensar e o fazer no processo de trabalho, o imaginário arcaico pode preencher esse vazio para lhe dar sentido: o sentido que sua irracionalidade pode ter.

Abstract in English:

In 1956, several apparitions of the devil during a whole week in a large modern factory in the outskirts of São Paulo showed that the phenomena of demonization can also take place outside the traditional and rural world of the peasantry. Modern industrial workers are also liable to invoke archaic imagery in an effort to understand changes in production technology. When industrial modernization introduces a radical divide between thinking and doing in the work process, archaic imagery can fill the vacuun to give it meaning: the meaning that its irrationality can bring.

Neste trabalho, procedo a uma análise das identidades de raiz sexual, étnica e cultural, à luz do processo histórico que as pretendeu suprimir — aliás sem êxito, como agora se verifica. A propósito, refiro-me às contestações romântica e marxista do reducionismo operado pela modernidade na sua versão hegemônica. Preocupo-me, em especial, com a questão da identidade da cultura portuguesa e proponho uma hipótese de trabalho sobre a sua caracterização.

In this work, I analyse the identities of sexual, ethnic and cultural roots, in the light of the historic process that intended to supress them - without success, in fact, as has now been proved. With regard, I refer to the romantic and marxist replies of the reductionism carried out by modernity in its hegemonic version. I give special care to the question of Portuguese cultural identity and propose a work hypothesis on its characterization.

Trata-se de exercício de interpretação da frase “tudo é água”, atribuída a Tales de Mileto. Depois da exposição dos pontos de vista do senso comum, da ciência e da filosofia sobre a utilidade da água para a vida, tenta-se recuperar, na dimensão simbólica, suas significações mais profundas como fonte, purificação e regeneração da vida humana. O artigo sugere que a poluição das águas pela moderna sociedade industrial agride brutalmente não só a vida biológica como também a vida psíquica.

Abstract in English:

It is an interpretation exercise of the phrase “everything is water”, attributed to Thales of Miletus. After presenting the common sense, scientific and philosofical points of view on the utility of water for life, an attempt is made to symbolically retrieve its deepest meanings as source, purification and regeneration of human life. The article suggests that pollution of waters by the modern industrial society brutally attacks not only biological but also psychic life.

As relações entre a filosofia de Nietzsche e a pintura de Munch são instigantes e complexas. Os aforismos, modo de expressão primordial em Nietzsche da mesma maneira que o são as séries em Munch, lhe permitem perseguir uma idéia a partir de várias perspectivas possibilitanto, a ambos, experimentos com o pensar. Cada pintura propõe uma interpretação diferente para um mundo onde não existem mais fatos e onde a separação sujeito-objeto foi definitivamente abolida. Assim , ao pintar a dor, os ciúmes, a doença, o grito, a morte, a solidão, a paixão, as mulheres, Munch não mergulha, como poderia parecer à primeira vista, no pessimismo absoluto mas, pelo contrário, diz sim a tudo o que é problemático, colocando-se na direção da superação da morte na vida, sendo e fazendo uma pintura trágica, dionisíaca.

Relations between Nietzsche’s philosophy and Munch’s painting are instigating and complex. Aphorisms, Nietzsche’s main form of expression, just as series are for Munch, allow him to pursue an idea from several perspectives in such a way that it enables both to make thought experiments. Each painting proposes a different interpretation for a world where facts no longer exist and where an end was definitely put to the separation between subject-object. Thus, in painting pain, jealousy, illness, shouting, death, loneliness, passion, women, Munch does not dive into absolute pessimism, as would seem at first sight, but, on the contrary, say Yes to everything that is problematic, placing himself in the direction of overcoming death in life, being and making a tragic, Dionysian painting.

O artigo considera a umbanda, religião afro-brasileira de constituição recente, como estando dividida entre os apelos de suas raízes negras e os atrativos legitimadores da adoção dos princípios éticos cristãos. Embora pouco racionalizada e postulando uma visão de mundo predominantemente encantada, vem crescentemente moralizando-se a partir, sobretudo, das influências do ideal kardecista da caridade. Tal incorporação não é, contudo, linear, mas reinterpretada a partir da vivência concreta de seus agentes e moderada pela necessidade da cobrança por serviços religiosos prestados e pela "demanda", concepção mágica de conflito inter-individual.

The article considers Umbanda a recently formed afro-brazilian religion, devided between the pleas of its black roots and the legitimizing attractions of adopting Christian ethical principles. In spite of barely rationalized and alleging a predominantly enchanted view of the world, it has been becoming increasingly moralized, above all, as from influences of the Kardecist ideal of charity. Such an integration is not, however, linear, but reinterpreted as from the concrete experience of its agents and moderated by the need of requesting religious services rendered and by the “demand”, magic concept of inter-individual conflict.

Neste artigo exploro alguns sentidos políticos do dilema entre o universal e o particular, concebido como traço distintivo do projeto moderno de uma sociedade secular, livre e igualitária. Para isso, discuto certas configurações desse dilema presentes no pensamento antropológico clássico, no pensamento político do século XIX e no debate político-cultural contemporâneo sobre o multiculturalismo e o direito às diferenças.

In this article, I take up some of the political meanings of the dilemma between universality and particularity, conceived as a distinct feature of the modern project of a secular, free and equalitarian society. Thus, I discuss some of the configurations of this dilemma present in classical anthropological thought, in the political thought of the nineteenth century and in the contemporary politicalcultural debate about multiculturalism and the right to differences.

Este artigo analisa o conto de Machado de Assis, O Alienista. Ficção centrada nos delírios de Simão Bacamarte, médico-psiquiatra, nela estão referidas as pretensões e impasses das concepções científicas do século XIX, em particular do Positivismo, que tem vínculos profundos com o nascimento das Ciências Humanas. De um lado, a sede de explicação rigorosa de seu objeto, no caso, a Loucura, e, de outro, o direito que se arroga de dizer a verdade a respeito da Loucura e do Louco e de agir sobre ele com plenos e legítimos direitos. A obra de Machado denuncia o vínculo entre ciência e poder bem como a usurpação, pelo homem de ciência, do direito que cada um tem de dizer a sua própria verdade. O que conduz à ironia final: parece haver mais loucura na pretensão de estabelecer com nitidez a linha divisória entre Razão e Loucura do que em perder-se entre seus supostos limites.

Abstract in English:

This article analyzes Machado de Assis’ short story The Alienist. Centered on the delusions of Simão Bacamarte, a physician and psychiatrist, in this fiction are reflected the impasses and intentions of the scientific conceptions of the nineteenth century, particularly of the Positivism which has profound links with the birth of the Humanities. On the one hand, the thirst for a scientifically sound explanation of its object, in this case Madness, and on the other the right he attributes himself of arbitrating on Madness and the Mad, and of acing upon these arbitrations with complete and total powers. Machado de Assis’ work denounces the link between science and power, as well as the appropriation by men of science of the right each individual possesses of telling his or her own truth. This conducts the story to its final irony: there seems to be more madness in the pretension of establishing clear-cut limits between Reason and Madness than in losing oneself between these proposed limits.

As novas formas de sociabilidade que se gestam entre os jovens, moradores dos bairros periféricos das grandes cidades, nascem principalmente da socialização no mundo da rua, suas esquinas e pontos de encontro, onde desenvolvem relações de amizade e lazer, enfrentam os mecanismos da violência urbana e vivem, na luta pela sobrevivência, o confronto diário com os aparelhos repressivos. Neste espaço buscam construir identidades coletivas e diversas modalidades de sociabilidade. Algumas formas de ação reúnem atividades expressivas em torno da música e da dança de rua, como o RAP - Rhythm and Poetry - na periferia de São Paulo e outras cidades brasileiras. Agrupando jovens, em sua maioria negros e pobres, o RAP por meio da dança e da música, praticadas sobretudo nas ruas, denuncia a exclusão cultural, a violência policial e critica a discriminação sofrida no mundo do trabalho e da escola.

New forms of collective action spring up in the realm of urban life and feature as main actors the young dwellers of the outskirts of cities like São Paulo (Brazil). Brought about from the sociability in the world of the streets, these forms of action structure the young actors around various trends which may result in the formation of gangs, mobs and racist groups - the skinheads - or groups which gather round activities of self expression like music. As from the mid 80s one has seen the springing up and spreading of RAP music groups (Rhythm and Poetry). By means of dance and music, which is carried out in the streets, RAP gathers mostly the poor young black people and points out cultural exclusion, police violence and discrimination at work and school.
