The rufianes of Buenos Aires: Global Pimping Practices in Argentina, 1924-1936

Abstract

The aim of this article is to study the practices, meanings, and trajectories of men regarded by the State as pimps between 1924 and 1936. The text studies these relations as a specific variable of the heterogenous configurations of the sale of sex. It describes subjects who shared a repertoire of practices which included obtaining money from two or more women who sold sex, the circulation of knowledge and social capital at the local, regional, and transnational scale in the medium or short term, all connected through reciprocal solidarities between colleagues in the construction of commercial circuits of sex. To achieve this a documentary corpus is used including files on the expulsion of foreigners, documents from the League of Nations, and the report of the private researcher Paul Kinsie, amongst others.
