ABOUT THE JOURNAL

Brief Background

 

The journal Cadernos Saúde Coletiva began its activities in 1987 with a quarterly periodicity and, starting in 2024, adopts a continuous publication flow system, expediting the publication of already approved works. The institution directly responsible for the journal is the Institute of Collective Health Studies at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro.

The mission of Cadernos Saúde Coletiva is to contribute to the consolidation and development of the Collective Health knowledge field, affirming its multidisciplinary character and its commitment to social transformations that result in benefits for the health of human populations, through the dissemination of original research of a theoretical or applied nature of interest to public health.

The abbreviated title of the journal is Cad. Saude Colet., which should be used in bibliographies, footnotes, references, and bibliographic captions.

 

 

Open Science Compliance

 

Cadernos Saúde Coletiva follows an open access policy, specifically Gold Open Access, providing full and free access to its articles. 

Cadernos Saúde Coletiva encourages the publication of preprint articles on public platforms such as SciELO Preprints. The use of preprints promotes the timely communication of research results, allows the author to receive critiques and suggestions, and make modifications deemed pertinent to enhance the quality of the manuscript.

During the manuscript submission process, authors must complete and submit the Open Science Compliance Form.

 

 

Ethics in Publication

 

The journal Cadernos Saúde Coletiva adopts and follows the guidelines and recommendations of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) e do ICMJE (International Committee of Medical Journal Editors) to ensure ethics and integrity in scientific publishing.

Research articles involving human subjects must indicate, in the Methods section, their explicit compliance with ethical standards and the informed consent of participants. Studies must adhere to Resolution 466/2012 of the National Health Council of the Brazilian Ministry of Health, which addresses the Code of Ethics for Research on Human Beings, and the Declaration of Helsinki.

Studies involving animals must explicitly state compliance with international ethical principles and national guidelines that regulate research with animals and present the approval number from the Animal Research Ethics Committee.

Approval by an appropriate Ethics Committee is a mandatory requirement for any research involving humans or animals. Authors must include in the manuscript the name of the ethics committee responsible for the approval, along with the reference number of the approved project.

Only clinical research articles that have received an identification number from one of the Clinical Trial Registries validated by the criteria established by WHO and ICMJE, whose addresses are available on the ICMJE website, will be accepted for publication. The identification number should be recorded in the Methods section.

To ensure the study adheres to good practice standards, the use of the checklist below is recommended. Other guides are listed at the Equator Network webpage.

Focus and Scope

 

Cadernos Saúde Coletiva publishes results of empirical and theoretical research that fall within the field of Collective Health and its interfaces. As Collective Health is an inherently interdisciplinary field, there is a wide spectrum of themes that identify with it. However, thematic diversity should not be confused with a diversity of objects. Therefore, the uniqueness of *Cadernos Saúde Coletiva* is expressed, in relation to research communication, by the emphasis on publishing manuscripts that have health as a collective phenomenon as their main focus.

Cadernos Saúde Coletiva publishes articles that significantly contribute to the advancement of knowledge and practice in the field of Collective Health and related areas. This includes, but is not limited to, studies that identify with the basic constitutive axes of Collective Health: Epidemiology; Health Policies, Planning, and Management; and Social and Human Sciences in Health. Cadernos Saúde Coletiva values topics of great interest and importance to collective health, such as Health and Environment, Health and Work, Social Representations in Health, Data Science in Public Health, Health Economics, among others.

EDITORIAL POLICY 

Preprints

 

Cadernos Saúde Coletiva encourages the publication of preprint articles on public platforms, such as SciELO Preprints. The journal considers that the use of preprints promotes the timely communication of research results, allows the author to receive critiques and suggestions, and make modifications deemed pertinent to enhance the quality of the manuscript without compromising its originality.

 

 

Peer Review Process

 

The submitted manuscripts undergo a pre-selection process, in which the Editors-in-Chief evaluate their suitability according to the editorial norms, scope, and quality standards of the journal. Manuscripts that do not meet these criteria are rejected at this initial stage.

Once approved in the pre-selection, the manuscripts are forwarded to the Associate Editors for evaluation and, if pertinent, sent to reviewers. 

Cadernos Saúde Coletiva adopts a double-blind peer review process by at least two reviewers, who can be members of the Scientific Council or invited reviewers. 

The peer review process includes the following steps:

  • Initial Evaluation Process by the Editors-in-Chief (pre-selection): One of the Editors-in-Chief reviews the manuscript against the journal's editorial norms, scope, and quality standards. If approved at this stage, the manuscript is sent for compliance evaluation with the journal's standards.
  • Compliance with Standards: The Editorial Assistant evaluates whether the manuscript complies with the Instructions to Authors. If not, the manuscript is returned for adjustments.
  • Submission for Peer Review: Once the requirements are met, the manuscript returns to one of the Editors-in-Chief, who assigns an Associate Editor. The Associate Editor selects reviewers specialized in the subject matter and/or methods used in the manuscript.
  • Reviewers' Opinions: The reviewers evaluate the manuscript anonymously and submit their recommendations through the ScholarOne system (https://mc04.manuscriptcentral.com/cadsc-scielo). Based on these reviews, the Associate Editor makes a preliminary recommendation of (1) Accept the manuscript without modifications, (2) Accept the manuscript with major modifications, (3) Accept the manuscript with minor modifications, (4) Reject the manuscript with the option of resubmission, or (5) Reject the manuscript.
  • Final Decision: The Editor-in-Chief or the Associate Editor make the final decision on the manuscript, which is communicated to the authors.

In line with Open Science communication practices, the journal adopts in its editorial policy the openness of the peer review process, offering reviewers the option to communicate directly with the corresponding author, with or without revealing identities. Authors may agree to interact directly with the reviewers responsible for the manuscript evaluation when offered the option.

 

 

Open Data

 

Cadernos Saúde Coletiva recommends sharing the data, codes, methods, and other materials used and resulting from the research that typically underpin the texts of articles published by the journals.

The data, codes, and materials underlying the article and used in the conception and execution of the research should be properly cited in the text and included in the reference list, preferably with a persistent identifier such as a DOI.

It is recommended to store observed, collected, and generated data to validate the results of the original research, whether raw data, processed data, audio, video, code, software, algorithms, protocols, or methods.

The research data of the manuscript approved for publication may, starting in 2024, be stored in the SciELO Data repository.

 

 

Fees

 

Cadernos Saúde Coletiva does not charge submission fees, article processing charges (APC), or publication fees. 

 

 

Ethics and Misconduct, Correction and Retraction Policy

 

Cadernos Saúde Coletiva is committed to upholding the integrity of the literature and publishes Errata, Expressions of Concern, or Retraction Notices depending on the situation and in accordance with the guidelines and recommendations of COPE and SciELO.

In cases of misconduct, the journal will apply the retraction policy as outlined in the Good Practices Guide proposed by SciELO. (Guidelines on Best Practices for Strengthening Ethics in Scientific Publication). 

The registration and publication of correction will follow the recommendations proposed by SciELO (Guide to recording, marking and publishing Correction (Portuguese Only).

The registration and publication of retraction will follow the recommendations proposed by SciELO (Guide for registering, marking and publishing a retraction (Portuguese Only).

 

 

Policy on Conflict of Interest

 

Conflicts of interest can be of a personal, commercial, political, academic, or financial nature. Conflicts of interest may occur when authors, reviewers, or editors have interests that could influence the preparation or evaluation of manuscripts.

Authors must provide a statement of conflicts of interest on a specific form upon manuscript submission (Cover Page). If there are no conflicts to declare, the following should be mentioned: "The authors declare no conflicts of interest." This statement will ultimately be published if the article is accepted.

Reviewers and editors involved in the evaluation and processing of the article must disclose in a statement whether or not there is a conflict of interest. If there is a conflict of interest, even if potential, it must be reported in a signed document and attached to the processing file. This information will be published if the article is approved.

All authors, reviewers, and editors involved in the evaluation and processing of the article must disclose any financial and personal relationships with other people or organizations that could inappropriately influence their activity. Examples of potential competing conflicts of interest include employment, consultancy, stock ownership, honoraria, paid expert testimony, patent applications/registrations, and grants or other funding.

When editors have a conflict of interest, they must delegate the decision-making to other editors.

Adoption of similarity software

 

Cadernos Saúde Coletiva employs professional similarity detection tools (Grammarly, CopySpider, Plagiarisma). Manuscripts are checked upon submission (original submission or revision). If a higher-than-expected degree of similarity is identified, the Editors-in-Chief conduct a qualitative evaluation to determine whether it is a case of plagiarism or self-plagiarism. The result of this evaluation may recognize (1) absence of plagiarism, (2) existence of minor similarities that can be adjusted, or (3) plagiarism/self-plagiarism, resulting in the manuscript being rejected for publication.

If there are doubts or additional information is needed, one of the Editors-in-Chief will contact the corresponding author and, if necessary, all the authors. If misconduct is proven, in addition to the article being rejected for publication, the Editors-in-Chief will decide on the appropriate sanctions for each case, considering the input of the Editorial Board members.

 

 

 

Regarding the Use of Artificial Intelligence in Manuscript Preparation

 

Authors who use generative artificial intelligence must describe, on the Cover Page and within the manuscript, the tool used and how it was employed.

Artificial intelligence (AI) or similar technologies cannot be considered authors or co-authors of texts, as authorship requires the presence of a person capable of assuming legal responsibility for the originality, accuracy, and integrity of the work.

 

 

 

Gender and Sex Issues

 

The editorial team of Cadernos Saúde Coletiva, as well as the authors who publish in the journal, must always observe the guidelines on Sex and Gender Equity in Research (SAGER). (Sex and Gender Equity in Research – SAGER). The SAGER guidelines comprise a set of directives that guide the reporting of information on sex and gender in study design, data analysis, and the results and interpretation of findings. Additionally, Cadernos Saúde Coletiva observes the policy of gender equity in the composition of its editorial board.

Authors must attach a statement of approval from the ethics committee of the institution responsible for approving the research.

Authors of articles published by Cadernos Saúde Coletiva retain the copyright of their works, licensing them under the Creative Commons Attribution CC-BY license, which allows articles to be reused and distributed without restriction, provided the original work is properly cited.

INSTRUCTIONS TO AUTHORS

Types of Documents Accepted

 

Cadernos Saúde Coletiva publishes original works considered relevant to the field of Collective Health. 

Works are accepted in Portuguese, Spanish, and English for the following sections:

  • Review: Systematic or scoping reviews on topics relevant to Collective Health, with a maximum of 4,500 words and 5 illustrations. Systematic reviews must have their protocol published or registered in a systematic review registry such as PROSPERO. Scoping review protocols must also be registered in a registry like the Open Science Framework. The journal does not accept narrative or integrative reviews.
  • Original Articles: Results of empirical research using quantitative or qualitative methods (maximum of 4,000 words and 5 illustrations).
  • Brief Communication: Reporting preliminary research results or results of original studies that can be presented concisely (maximum of 2,000 words and 2 illustrations).
  • Debate (by invitation only): Analysis of relevant topics in the field of Collective Health, accompanied by critical comments signed by authors invited by the Editors, followed by a response from the author of the main article (maximum of 4,000 words and 5 illustrations).
  • Education Corner: articles should be innovative, critical and suitable for use in teaching courses in public health, epidemiology, biostatistics and related fields, as well as being useful for continuing professional development (maximum of 2,000 words and 4 illustrations).

Manuscript Preparation

 

Cadernos Saúde Coletiva requires that all submitted articles meet the quality standards established by the guidelines for health research reporting by the Enhancing the Quality and Transparency of Health Research (EQUATOR) Network.

To ensure the study adheres to good practice standards, the use of the checklist below is recommended. Other guides are listed at Equator Network:

Article Submission Format

 

The texts must be in English, Spanish, or Portuguese.

The submitted manuscript should be sent in Microsoft Word format and organized as follows, with these items being mandatory:

Cover Letter to the Editor-in-Chief, providing an overview of the article, its significance within the context, highlights on its originality, main findings, and final considerations. Additionally, this letter must include a statement confirming that the manuscript is not being simultaneously submitted to another journal and that there is no conflict of interest.

Title Page, which must contain:

  • Title of the work in the original language and in English, and if the original article is in English, also a title in Portuguese (up to 50 words)
  • Short title (up to 50 characters)
  • Names of the authors
  • Authors' ORCID iDs
  • Authors' qualifications
  • Authors' institutional affiliations
  • Email of the corresponding author
  • Full address of the corresponding author
  • Acknowledgements. Individuals or institutions that provided some collaboration to the work but do not meet the authorship criteria (optional).

Statement indicating that the research was approved by an institutional ethics committee. Approval by an appropriate Ethics Committee is a mandatory requirement for any research involving humans or animals. It is imperative that authors include in the manuscript the name of the ethics committee responsible for the approval, along with the reference number of the approved project.

 

 

General rules

 

Abstract

The abstract should concisely present the central research question, methods used, results, and the answer to the central question of the work (up to 200 words). 

The abstract should be structured into Introduction, Objective, Method, Results, and Conclusion. 

All articles submitted in Portuguese or Spanish must have an abstract in the main language and its translation into English (Abstract). In the case of an article submitted in English, the abstract must also be presented in Portuguese. 

They should also include a minimum of 3 and a maximum of 5 keywords, translated into each language (palavras-chave, palabras clave), preferably using Descriptors for Health Sciences, DeCS (to be obtained at http://decs.bvs.br/).

Authorship Responsibility Document

At the time of submission, it is necessary to submit the authorship responsibility document, signed by each author. Authorship responsibility document template can be found here.

Main Document

The main document must not contain the authors' identification. 

The main document should begin with the title of the article, Abstract and Keywords in both languages. Then, the manuscript text should be divided into subsections.

 

 

Manuscript Submission

 

The journal uses the ScholarOne system for article submission, which can be accessed through the site https://mc04.manuscriptcentral.com/cadsc-scielo. 

All authors must register in the journal system to submit manuscripts. The editorial process for manuscripts should also be tracked through the system. Necessary contact with the author will be made by email.

 

 

Digital Assets

 

Illustrations: The maximum number of illustrations (charts, tables, graphs, maps, figures, etc.) must follow the recommendations for the different types of manuscripts accepted for submission, as described above. Requests for exceptions to the number of charts, tables, and/or figures (graphs, maps, etc.) should be presented at the time of submission and justified in writing (attached to the title page). The Editors-in-Chief will evaluate the pertinence and editorial feasibility of accepting an exceeding number of illustrations on a case-by-case basis.

Tables: Tables should be presented in the body of the text, where they should be inserted, consecutively numbered with Arabic numerals, in the order they are cited in the text. They must have a brief title, with the location and year of the data presented as the final part of the title. It should be emphasized that the table must be self-explanatory, thus avoiding abbreviations. Any necessary abbreviations, as well as other explanatory notes, should be described in the table's footnote, even if they have already been mentioned in the text.

Figures: Photographs, drawings, graphs, maps, etc. should be cited as figures. They must be consecutively numbered with Arabic numerals, in the order they are cited in the text. Captions should be presented at the end of the figure. Figures can be included in the body of the manuscript, but should also be submitted in a separate file (e.g., jpeg, tiff), meeting resolution specifications (minimum 300 dpi).

Equations: Equations should be centered and sequentially numbered, with the numbers in parentheses, aligned to the right.

 

 

Citations and References

 

The adopted standard for references is Vancouver. Cite references in the text using Arabic numerals in the order of citation, in parentheses. The first six authors should be cited. After the 6th author, include "et al.".

 

 

 

Supplementary Documents

 

In addition to the documents already described in the Article Submission Format section, the following supplementary documents are required:

Each document must be attached separately in the designated field within the ScholarOne system. Before starting the process, the person responsible for the submission must register in the system as an author and create/associate their ORCID record. All authors must be registered in the system and have an updated ORCID record.

 

 

Funding Statement

 

Authors must provide detailed information about the sources of funding for their work when submitting their manuscripts to Cadernos Saúde Coletiva, including:

  • Identification of the Funders (institutions, organizations, or individuals who provided financial or other support for the development of the work).
  • Contract Details (if applicable, provide the contract number or any other specific reference related to financial support).
