Instructions to authors

Scope and policy

The journal, which is mainly aimed at the academic community, welcomes scholarly articles in the most diverse methodological and critic trends. The journal’s main areas of interest are literary studies, Brazilian literature and comparative literature, focused on the work of Machado de Assis.

The journal receives, reviews and publishes articles in Portuguese and English. The articles, which are received and published on a rolling basis, must be unpublished. In line with open science practices, the journal accepts submission of articles previously deposited on the SciELO Preprints server, whose rules are defined on the site https://preprints.scielo.org.

All papers received by the editors will be submitted for review by the journal’s editorial board and/or ad hoc reviewers, members of the Brazilian and international academic community, specially invited for each review and who hold a doctoral degree.

Every article will be assessed by two reviewers. In the case of a discrepancy in the evaluation, the editors make the final decision. Based on the reviewers’ recommendations, the editors will communicate the authors whether the paper was accepted for publication.

Also in line with the practices of open science, the journal offers authors and reviewers the option to open the peer review process, with or without identification of their names. Authors may authorize the disclosure of their names when submitting the article, and peer reviewers may authorize their names when filling out the Evaluation Form.

Should the reviews underlying the decision to publish the article be published, they may be edited by the journal's editorial board.

The texts accepted for publication are submitted to editorial treatment and are sent to their respective authors for their final approval.

Sometimes the journal publishes articles originally presented at conferences, public talks and papers delivered at scientific events organized or not by the journal board itself or by individual members of the editorial board.

The editors also publish book reviews about Machado de Assis's work, or about new editions of his books. Prior to sending a book review, please consult the editors regarding  their interest in publishing such a review. The reviews also go through the peer review process.

The moral and intellectual rights of articles belong to the authors and are not the property of the journal, which is also not responsible for the opinions expressed by the authors.

Preparing and formatting manuscripts

Articles on the work of Machado de Assis, in Portuguese or English and unpublished in Brazil, should have ao minimum of 25.000 and a maximum of 42.000 characters with  spaces (including paratexts). Articles that do not fall within these parameters will be returned to the authors before the evaluation process begins. Only in very exceptional cases may the editors approve articles with more or fewer characters than stipulated above.

If the author does not wish to be identified by the evaluators, the file containing the article should not have any trace of authorship, and when citing their own works, authors are urged to do so in an impersonal manner. In a separate eletronic document, the author should include a text of about 600 characters containing their academic degree, institutional affiliation, recent production and e-mail address, which will be published along with the article in case of approval, and identification number on the ORCID platform.

Works submitted to the journal must be accompanied by titles and abstracts in Portuguese and English (120 words at most), as well as (three to five) key words in Portuguese and English.

All articles are received by the editors and distributed for evaluation by members of the editorial board and ad hoc reviewers, members of the Brazilian and international academic community, specially invited for each evaluation. Each article is evaluated by two reviewers and the editors are responsible for arbitrating in cases of discrepancy. Based on the recommendation of the reviewers ("Accept", "Accept with reservations", "Necessary corrections", "Resubmit", "Refuse"), the editors communicate to the authors acceptance or refusal of their articles for publication. The texts accepted for publication undergo editorial treatment, are submitted to the respective authors for their final approval, and are available to the editors for publication on the first opportune occasion.
