ABOUT THE JOURNAL

Brief Background

The Química Nova has been published by PubliSBQ, managed by the Brazilian Chemical Society (SBQ), since 1978 and publishes articles with original research results, review papers, dissemination of new methods or techniques, education and general subjects in Portuguese, Spanish and English.

The submitted articles are evaluated by ad hoc consultants (from Brazil and abroad) who are experts in the area involved and who may eventually belong to the Editorial Board. Publication of the Química Nova is in charge of the Editors, and its policy and planning are the responsibility of the Editors and Editorial Advisory Board.

Open Science Compliance

Química Nova (QN) is a fully open access journal. All articles published by the QN are made freely and permanently accessible online immediately upon publication, without any subscription charges or registration barriers.

Ethics in Publication

QN requests that authors follow the ethical rules described below when submitting their papers. In case of non-compliance, sanctions may be applied according to the recommendations of COPE (Committee on Publication Ethics). COPE is the forum for guidance and recommendations on ethics in academic publications for QN editors.

Ethical obligations of authors towards the scientific community and QN (SBQ):

1. Information and co-authorship permission
The submitting author is responsible for including in the author list the names of every researcher actually responsible for the work. It is his/her duty to inform his/her collaborators of the manuscript content and obtain their permission for submission and publication.

2. Privileged Information
It is the authors' responsibility to carefully search through the several searching sites (SCI-ISI, Scopus, Google, and so on) for all the scientific work relevant to their reasoning, whether they agree or not with the results and hypotheses presented.
Data taken from the work of researchers, other than the ones who are authors of the manuscript being submitted to QN, must be properly cited and credited.  Such identification must be as detailed as possible. Privileged information, such as personal communications or discussions with a non-author, can only be cited with the explicit permission of the involved researcher.

3. Fragmentation
Work fragmentation takes too much journal space and makes literature research more difficult and time consuming. A scientist who does extensive work in a system or group of similar systems should organize his/her publication so as to present a solidly based study, as complete as possible, even if it covers only one aspect of such system.

4. Exclusivity
Simultaneous submission of the same manuscript to more than one journal places unnecessary extra load on the peer reviewing system, and expectations on the journal that may be deceived if an accepted manuscript is withdrawn, representing an ethical deviation which is not accepted in the SBQ Journals.

5. Duplication/Plagiarism
Plagiarism, defined as "the appropriation of someone else's ideas, processes, results or words, without the proper credit" is not accepted in SBQ's scientific journals. We consider plagiarism the word-for-word (or close to) copy of any other author's texts or sentences. The self-plagiarism, that is, the replication of texts or data from previous works of the authors themselves, with or without the proper citation, is equally unacceptable. Reasonable repetition of some ideas and the re-ordering of one or two sentences by the authors themselves are acceptable. Word-for-word replication of data or sentences must come between quotation marks and with the due credit, in case it is essential for the discussion or contextualization of a specific set of data or hypotheses. It is equally unacceptable the suggestion of newness when the methodology or results have already been published, either by the author him/herself or by any other author.

6. About Copyright
Authors of articles published by the QN journal retain the copyright of their works, licensing them under the Creative Commons Attribution license, which allows articles to be reused and distributed without restriction, as long as the original work is correctly cited.

7. Request of permission to reproduce already published material

Focus and Scope

Manuscripts in Portuguese, English and Spanish, covering the traditional areas of Chemistry as well as articles on Chemistry Teaching, History of Chemistry, Scientific Policy, etc., as well as articles in related areas, will be considered for publication in Química Nova, as long as they have accentuated chemical content.

Digital Preservation

QN's editorial board is responsible for the implementation and execution of digital preservation activities and is committed to maintaining regular records of the organization's digital resources to identify and document data types, file formats, and storage locations. Digital assets are stored in secure environments that are protected from threats such as data loss, corruption, and unauthorized access. QN's editorial office is responsible for facilitating the migration from obsolete file formats to more up-to-date formats, ensuring the continued accessibility of digital resources. Detailed metadata will be maintained for each digital asset, including information about its origin, authenticity, and context of use. Regular backups of digital assets are performed to ensure quick recovery in the event of a system failure or data loss. The digital preservation policy will be reviewed and updated regularly to ensure its continued effectiveness and compliance with best practices.

EDITORIAL POLICY

Preprints

  • The Química Nova considers the submission of manuscript deposited in preprint servers;
  • The Journal considers work submission both previously and simultaneous posted on a preprint platform;
  • The Química Nova does not authorize the posting of versions revised during peer review on a preprint server;
  • The use of a preprint repository must be informed in the cover letter and in the submission platform, with the inclusion of the preprint link and DOI of the posted work;
  • The preprint DOI (and link) needs to be cited in the reference list of the submitted manuscript;
  • In case of acceptance of the paper in the Química Nova, the preprint must updated with link of the publication;
  • The authors are responsible for checking the compatibility between the license type chosen in the preprint server posting and the copyright of the article (this is assigned to the Sociedade Brasileira de Química (SBQ));
  • The Química Nova draws attention to the authorship, for some license types of the preprint, the authorship must be the same in the repository and in the published in the Journal.

Peer Review Process

Química Nova adopts the single-blind peer review system, where experts in the field evaluate the submitted manuscripts. This process ensures the quality and validity of published research, maintaining high standards of academic integrity and credibility. The entire process, from submission to approval, is carried out through the electronic scientific journal management system ScholarOne.

Manuscripts submitted to QN are pre-evaluated by the editorial team to verify compliance with the criteria established in the Ethics Policy. Those that present inconsistency regarding the criteria of this first stage are returned to the author. Approved documents are forwarded to an Editor-in-Chief of the area who then passes to an Associate Editor (AE). The AE, in addition to certifying the adequacy of the manuscript to the scope of the journal, evaluates the scientific merit specific to the theme of the manuscript and, if pertinent, submits it to at least two ad hoc reviewers. Based on the opinions of the reviewers and its own analysis, the AE recommends the acceptance, minor revision, major revision or rejection of the manuscript. Manuscripts, whose decision is for major or minor revision, or rejection with the possibility of resubmission, are returned to the authors so that they can meet the guidelines of the reviewers. The revised version is re-evaluated by the same AE that will verify whether it will be necessary to go through the peer review again or not. Once approved for publication, the works are sent to the editing process.

As part of its commitment to the principles of open science, QN includes the name of the responsible editor in published articles.

Open Data

Química Nova actively promotes a culture of open science by advocating for the sharing, citation, and referencing of comprehensive data, program codes, and other essential content linked to article texts. This initiative aims to facilitate the rigorous evaluation of research, promote replicability in scientific research and contribute to the preservation and reuse of valuable content. Authors are encouraged to publish shared data on their preferred platforms.

In alignment with standard academic practices, citations play an important role in improving accessibility to research content. Just as articles, books, and online publications are cited, the same consideration must be given to the data, ensuring adequate citation in the text and inclusion in the bibliography. This approach enhances the transparency, credibility and academic impact of research results.

INSTRUCTIONS TO AUTHORS

1. General

Articles suitable for publication in the journal Química Nova are those written in Portuguese, English, or Spanish and that cover the traditional fields of chemistry as well as articles on chemical education, the history of chemistry, science policy, etc., besides articles on related fields, as long as they have a substantial chemical content (click here for restriction rules). Publications may be in the form of one of the following types:

Original Article: for communicating original research. Articles should include the sections Introduction, Experimental, Results and Discussion, Conclusions, and References, according to the work being submitted.

Articles on Education: for communicating topics related to learning and teaching chemistry at undergraduate/postgraduate levels and for disseminating innovative experiments useful for introducing chemical phenomena to undergraduates and postgraduates. These articles should be no longer than 25 pages (including figures, tables, diagrams, etc.).

Technical Notes: for communicating methods, techniques, equipment, and accessories developed in the author's laboratory, as long as they have a substantial chemical content. Notes should include Introduction, Experimental, Results and Discussion, Conclusions, and References, according to the work being submitted.

General Subjects: for communicating on topics of general interest for chemists, such as science policy, undergraduate and postgraduate programs, history of Chemistry, etc. These articles should be no longer than 40 pages (including figures, tables, diagrams, etc.).

Reviews: for communicating progress in a specific field of chemistry, with the objective of providing a critical account of the state-of-the-art from the point of view of the highly qualified and experienced specialist. The Editors suggest Review Articles should be no longer than 60 pages (including figures, tables, diagrams, etc.). It is essential for authors to have publications in the field reviewed, attesting to their experience and qualification. Before submitting the manuscript, author(s) should send an e-mail to quimicanova@sbq.org.br with (i) an abstract of the review, (ii) a letter explaining the relevance of the publication, (iii) the detailed methodology employed in the literature search, and (iv) list of publications of the author in the area in which the researcher intends to publish. The Editors refuse solicitations of themes previously published in the last 05 years, even they were written in different idioms. The material will be examined by the Editorial Board, and once approved, corresponding author will be requested to submit the full manuscript, according to Química Nova guidelines. This manuscript will then be submitted to referees to be evaluated. Acceptance of submission does not guarantee publication of the final manuscript.

2. Submission

When submitting a manuscript to Química Nova, it is assumed that it has not been previously published (with the exception of preprints in repositories), that it is not under evaluation by another entity and that it will not be published simultaneously in another dissemination vehicle, in the same format, without the written permission of the editorial office.

2.1 Before Submission

(A) Manuscripts first evaluation

Química Nova offers only online submission, through the link: https://mc04.manuscriptcentral.com/qn-scielo.

All authors must have their names registered in the platform. Thus, during submission, fill the requested forms and provide the correct email addresses of all co-authors.

At the ScholarOne-QN system, all files need to be uploaded INDIVIDUALLY:

Main document (full.doc), incluindo todas as figuras, tabelas e respectivas legendas, as quais devem ser inseridas após a primeira citação. Esse arquivo deve ser feito utilizando, necessariamente, o modelo disponível para download. No caso do manuscrito conter Material Suplementar, esse deve ser adicionado no final do main document.

All original files of figures (including the Graphical Abstract) should be uploaded in any of the following formats: jpg, tiff, opj, xls, cdx, etc. For example, if the manuscript has six figures, you must individually upload each of the six original files, along with the main document that already contains all the figures.

Observações:
- In case the figure is an image file, it needs to have high resolution (minimum of 300 dpi);
- Do not send the figures inserted in a .doc/.docx/pdf file, send all the original files (opj, xls, tiff, etc.). This will speed up the evaluation of your manuscript and the publication process, in case the manuscript is accepted.
- Send original files of the figures of the Supplementary Material.

(B) Manuscript already evaluated (Resubmission: Reject and Reject&Resubmission)

In cases that the manuscript has already received a decision from JBCS Editor like Reject and Reject&Resubmission some specific requirements are necessary:
(i) Main document: the modifications need to be highlighted with a different color guiding Editor/Reviewers with changes made in relation to the original version (do not use the track changes mode in MS Word).
(ii) Be sure that the Response Letter, in the place of the cover letter, itemizes each comment addressed, as well as any changes made, of all Referee(s) and Editor (if so). Write a very convincing text explaining the points that were introduced/removed, new experiments that were used. Add, please: "Response Letter for ID QN-202x-0xxx (previous ID ): ..."
(iii) Replace all the files that were modified uploading with the new files.
For Reject&Resubmission decision, Authors may access the previous ID (one that received the decision) in the Author Center at the QN-ScholarOne submission site (https://mc04.manuscriptcentral.com/qn-scielo at the link "Manuscripts with Decisions") and then in "create a resubmission" to resubmit the manuscript. With the resubmission, the manuscript will receive a new ID. The use of this link will accelerate the evaluation since the system will keep all the decisions for the previous ID linked to the new ID.

2.2 Authors' Contribution
For manuscripts with 6 or more authors, QN requires the specification of each author's individual contribution to the text. This information, according to the 14 functions of the CRediT – Contributor Roles Taxonomy (niso.org), can be added before the Reference, named as Author Contributions. The 14 roles according to the CRediT taxonomy are: Conceptualization, Data Curation, Formal Analysis, Funding Acquisition, Investigation, Project Administration, Resources, Software, Validation, Visualization, Writing Original Draft, and Writing-Review & Editing.

2.3 Política Editorial da Química Nova para Preprints

  • The Química Nova considers the submission of manuscript deposited in preprint servers;
  • The Journal considers work submission both previously and simultaneous posted on a preprint platform;
  • The Química Nova does not authorize the posting of versions revised during peer review on a preprint server;
  • The use of a preprint repository must be informed in the cover letter and in the submission platform, with the inclusion of the preprint link and DOI of the posted work;
  • The preprint DOI (and link) needs to be cited in the reference list of the submitted manuscript;
  • In case of acceptance of the paper in the Química Nova, the preprint must updated with link of the publication;
  • The authors are responsible for checking the compatibility between the license type chosen in the preprint server posting and the copyright of the article (this is assigned to the Sociedade Brasileira de Química (SBQ));
  • The Química Nova draws attention to the authorship, for some license types of the preprint, the authorship must be the same in the repository and in the published in the Journal.

2.4 Manuscript Organization

Authors should present their material with utmost conciseness and clarity. The Introduction section should clearly and briefly identify, with relevant references, both the nature of the problem under investigation and its background. An Introduction consisting of an extensive literature review is not acceptable.

The Experimental section may precede or follow the Results and Discussion section, but must be separated from it. The Conclusions section, which briefly summarizes the main conclusions of the work, must be present immediately after the Results and Discussion section.

Experiments should be described in sufficient detail to enable other researchers to repeat them. The degree of purity of materials and their quantities should be reported. Descriptions of established procedures are unnecessary. An apparatus should be described only if it is non-standard. Commercially available instruments should be referred to by their suppliers and models.

All new compounds should be fully characterized using analytical methods, which include spectroscopy and elemental analyses. High-resolution mass spectra may substitute for elemental analyses if accompanied by unequivocal proof of sample purity (melting points, copies of NMR spectra, etc.). For compounds prepared in enantiomerically pure or enriched form, specific optical rotation must be reported. In cases where enantiomeric excess is determined by chromatographic and/or spectroscopic techniques, copies of the appropriate chromatograms and/or spectra should be included as Supplementary Material (please see Supplementary Material section).

Many theoretical and computational papers use a routine procedure based on a well-documented method, be it semi-empirical or ab initio. In such cases, it is sufficient to name the particular variant (referring to key papers in which the method has been developed), to cite the computer program used, and to indicate briefly any modifications made by the author.

It is the authors' responsibility to obtain permission from the copyright holder for the reproduction of figures from other publications. The obtained Copyright Permission should be sent along with other files when submitting the manuscript. Suitable acknowledgement of reproduction must be provided in the captions.

The Editors may request language revision at any moment during the evaluation process. When requested, the authors must present a certificate of revision emitted by a specialized company/professional, attesting formal review of English language and grammar. The certificate should be sent through the platform ScholarOne, when submitting the revised version of the manuscript.

3. Manuscript Preparation

3.1 General Overview

Times New Roman font (12-point, black) and 1.5-line spacing should be used for the text of the manuscript. Pages should be numbered consecutively in the bottom right corner. Lines, titles, and subtitles of the sections must not be numbered. Section headings should be typed in bold capital letters, the subtitles in bold, and sub subtitles just in italics.

Supplementary Material should be the last element of the manuscript, and should contain relevant and complementary information to that already presented in the manuscript (please see Supplementary Material section).

3.2 Graphical Abstract

The first page of the manuscript must contain the graphical abstract which summarizes the content of the manuscript in a concise, pictorial form, and should be designed to capture the attention of a wide readership. The author should not duplicate a graphic from the main text of the article but present a new figure based on a key structure, reaction, equation, concept, graphic, theorem, etc. Artistic and imaginative use of colors in the Graphical Abstract is encouraged. The use of photos of commercial equipment is not appropriate. The image must have high resolution (*.tiff /*.jpg or other formats that can be edited) and fit in an area no larger than 8 cm (width) by 4 cm (height) [the author should ensure that the annotations in the image are readable at these dimensions]. Along with the figure for Graphical Abstract, a short explanatory text (three lines, at the most) should be included below it.

3.3 Title and Affilliations

The second page must contain the title (in bold and uppercase), all authors' names (in bold) and affiliations. If the address where the work was carried out is different from the present address of any of the authors, a footnote indicating the current position can be included. Each address should have a correspondent letter.
As for instance:

José A. Benícioa, Maria C. Cavalcanteb e João D. de Almeidaa,*

3.8 Manuscripts Including NMR, IR, mass spectra, etc.

Whenever a compound is synthesized or identified (new or already known), it is imperative that spectral data (data and spectra) as Supplementary Material (see Supplementary Material section) is submitted along with the manuscript.

3.9 Supplementary Material

This resource was created so that the main text of the manuscript would contain only the strictly necessary figures and tables.
Contents for Supplementary Material should be placed at the end of the manuscript, after the References section. Whenever the Supplementary Material is present, a section named Supplementary Material, describing its content, should be created in the main text of the manuscript right after Conclusions. The text should also indicate the free access to the Supplementary Material at Química Nova website (http://quimicanova.sbq.org.br/) and the type of the file (pdf, xls, etc.)

3.10 Digital Assets

Graphical elements and tables for Supplementary Material should be sequentially numbered as in the following examples: Figure 1S, Figure 2S, Table 1S, Table 2S.

The Supplementary Material is a separate document. If references are used, they should be listed at the end of the Supplementary Material and numbered as 1S, 2S, etc.

Editors, at any time of the editing process, may ask authors to remove portion(s) of the manuscript and include it in the Supplementary Material.
