Objectives and Scope

  Texto & Contexto Enfermagem is a journal of international circulation. In open access format, it publishes technical-scientific articles related to the Health area, especially Nursing, written in Portuguese, English or Spanish, with one of those versions mandatorily in English.
The journal is affiliated with the Brazilian Association of Scientific Editors (ABEC) and International Academy of Nursing Editors (INANE)
Signatory of the San Francisco Declaration on Research Assessment - DORA (https://sfdora.org/)
Its abbreviated title Texto Contexto Enferm should be used in bibliographies, footnotes, references.

Mission

To disseminate the production of scientific and technological knowledge in health and nursing, emphasizing the quality of research and the improvement of Health Sciences.

Editorial policy

Manuscripts that do not meet the formatting set forth in Texto & Contexto rules can be submitted for initial evaluation. However, initial submission of the manuscript must follow the scientific article standard and include all the submission files necessary for review. Articles with review and final acceptance indication should be formatted by the authors according to Texto & Contexto specific requirements (standards for the references, tables, figures, etc.).

Texto & Contexto Enfermagem provides space for reflection and deepening of knowledge about issues of practice, teaching and research in health and nursing, at national and international levels.

The journal is published in a continuous flow. It accepts submissions of original manuscripts, reflection articles, experience and/or technological innovation reports, reviews and letters to the editor. Contributions designated to the dissemination of unpublished original research results are prioritized for publication.

Publication of special issues
The editorial policy of Revista Texto & Contexto Enfermagem for publication of thematic/special issues derives from two focuses: The first of them is defined by the journal Editorial Team with the objective of bringing several perspectives on topics of interest to the nursing scientific community, envisioning to increase journal visibility, as well as disseminating what has been debated theoretically and methodologically in academic/professional field. The second focus is to create a thematic/special issue based on scientific studies results presented at national and international nursing events, from themes of collective interest.

In both types of thematic/special issues, the manuscripts selection and analysis process follow the same analytical processes of manuscripts received in continuous flow. That is, critical analysis based on double-blind peer review and subsequent editorial team decision, which may be accept or not for publication, always with the possibility of authors performing revisions on their manuscripts.

The responsibility of managing the evaluation process of manuscripts received to meet the demand of thematic/special issues lies with the Revista Texto & Contexto Enfermagem editorial team, that is, Editor-in-chief and internal and external Associate Editors.

Peer Evaluation Process

The authors of a manuscript can follow its editorial flow through the ScholarOne system. As any and all decisions regarding the manuscript are communicated via email, they are made available in the system as soon as they are made.

All the manuscripts approved for their evaluation are forwarded to be submitted to analysis and opinion by different reviewers (blind peer review), and the decision is made based on each reviewer's experience. The invitation is sent via the ScholarOne system. The reviewer is allowed 5 days to answer in relation to acceptance or rejection of the evaluation request. After acceptance, the reviewer shall receive the link to access the system, where he/she will find a copy of the manuscript and the analysis instrument. The deadline to return the evaluation is 15 days from acceptance. Confidentiality of the authors' and reviewers' identity is guaranteed, as well as of their respective institutions of origin.

The reviewers can state their opinion and accept the material, indicate that it requires review to a greater or lesser extent, or reject it. The reviewers' opinions shall be submitted to an analysis by an Associated Editor and by the Editor-in-Chief, who will communicate the final decision to the authors.

The authors are allowed 15 days to implement the due adjustments, perform the linguistic review and resubmit the material via the ScholarOne system. They should restrict themselves solely to the corrections requested. The Associated Editor in charge of the manuscript evaluation process verifies if the review/correction requirements have been met, decides if the manuscript is approved or rejected, or if further adjustments are still necessary, and communicates his/her recommendation to the Editor-in-Chief.

The submission will be rejected if a significant similarity percentage between the manuscript and previously published content – plagiarism, self-plagiarism, etc. – is identified in any stage of the process.

The mean time from submission of the article to its evaluation and final decision is approximately 120 days.

The Journal's Editorial Team enjoys full authority to decide on the rejection, approval and publication of manuscripts.

Open Science Policy

The editorial policy of Texto & Contexto Enfermagem is based on rigorous quality criteria for indexing and publishing (including technical and normative aspects, graphic and textual quality and excellence in scientific content); on responsibility for shared management between the Board of Directors, Editorial Board and Associate Editors; and on the rigorous and constructive peer review, preserving the anonymity of authors and reviewers (double blinded). In line with the Open Science movement, Texto & Contexto accepts manuscripts deposited in preprint servers and offers the option of opening the process for peer evaluation of the manuscripts. The authors/reviewers can indicate whether they agree with this option at the time of submission/review. The names of the Editors that participated in evaluation of the manuscript are indicated/published in the final version of the article.

During the submission process, the authors should fill out the Open Science Compliance Form and send it as a Supplementary file NOT for review.

Texto & Contexto encourages the authors to share the data that originated the results and analyses of the article or to make them openly available, provided that this does not infringe human protection or other privacy and safety concerns.

The authors are also encouraged to consider the FAIR Data Principles and to deposit the dataset(s) in a well-known data repository capable of generating a persistent digital identifier, preferably a DOI, and that the repository has a long-term preservation plan, such as SciELO Data or Figshare.

The authors are also encouraged to cite any datasets mentioned in the article and to provide a Data availability statement.

At the time of submission, you will answer questions about availability of the dataset associated with the article. If your answer is affirmative, you will be asked to provide a pre-registered DOI, hyperlink or other persistent identifier associated with the dataset(s).

When one or several datasets are associated with a manuscript, they are not formally peer-reviewed as part of the journal's submission process. It is up to the authors to ensure data soundness. Any and all errors in the data are exclusive responsibility of those who produce the datasets.

Instructions to authors

General information

Manuscript submission is done on the ScholarOne platform.

Manuscripts submitted to the Texto & Contexto Enfermagem Journal must comply with its editorial policy and instructions to the authors, which follow the EQUATOR Network (https://www.equator-network.org), and the Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts (https://www.icmje.org/recommendations/).

Opinions and concepts expressed in manuscripts, as well as the accuracy, adequacy and origin of bibliographical citations are the sole responsibility of the authors, not necessarily reflecting the position of the Board of Directors. The journal discourages the submission of original manuscripts whose data collection goes back more than four years and of reviews whose data collection goes back more than one year.

Editorial flow

The review process involves the following phases:

1. Reception and Checklist
The editorial office classifies the manuscript according to the method used and applies the manuscript checklist, which includes verification of the entire documentation presented at the time of online submission. Non-compliant cases are returned to the corresponding author for adjustments.

2. Pre-analysis
The objective of this stage is to evaluate the manuscript for its contribution to the body of knowledge regarding content, the advance it represents for the practice, teaching and/or research in Nursing and Health, the theoretical, methodological and structural quality of the text and the compliance with the journal editorial policy.

3. Manuscript evaluation process

After being approved in the pre-analysis stage, the manuscript will be forwarded to an Associated Editor who monitors the evaluation process (blinded peer review), and issues his decision to the Editor-in-Chief.

All manuscripts selected for publication are analyzed by the Texto & Contexto Enfermagem librarian, who reviews all compliances with the journal's standards and references.

4. Publication
4.1. Publication fee
After the manuscript final accept, the authors receive an e-mail with orientations to pay the publication fee and to provide the translated version.

4.2. Translation
Texto & Contexto Enfermagem presents a group of accredited translators, whose names are forwarded to the corresponding author. That author is responsible for selecting the translator responsible for providing the English translation of the final version. It is the authors responsibility to verify the quality of the translation. The translators are responsible for forwarding the translated version to the journal.

4.3. Text and Layout Review
After the journal has received the English version of the manuscript, properly verified by the authors, the text and layout editors review the text and forward it for editorial production and publication gradually through the continuous flow system.

Types of manuscripts

Original article: contribution to disseminate findings of scientific research. The authors’ creativity and style in the manuscript format will be respect, provided that the content addresses the introduction, methods, results, discussion and conclusion. The introduction should be brief, define the research problem and its importance, besides highlighting the knowledge gap – "state of the art" and the study objectives. The method used should be defined, as well as the context/population studied, the data sources and sample selection criteria, the analysis processes, among others. These should be describe comprehensive and completely. In qualitative research, the description of the analysis process should address the details of the specific study steps, beyond the simple indication of the type of analysis applied. The information should be included that the research was conducted in accordance with the ethical standards required. The results should be described in a logical order. When using illustrations (tables, figures and pictures), the text should complement instead of repeat the content they contain. The discussion should be separated from the results and should contain comparisons between the results and the literature, the authors’ interpretation, the implications of the findings, the limitations and implications for future research. New and important aspects of the study should be emphasized. The conclusions should respond to the study objectives, without deviating from the data found. No bibliographic references should be cited. The total length of the article is limited to 15 pages, including abstract, tables and figures and excluding the references.

Experience report or Technological innovation: description of teaching practices, extension or assistance, or description of technological innovation products experiences. The content should address the introduction, method, experience results or innovation and conclusion. Its length is limited to 10 pages, including the abstract, tables and figures, and excluding the references.

Reflection: article to express opinions or analyze aspects that can contribute to go deeper into themes related to the health and nursing area. The content should address the introduction, reflection and conclusion. Its length is limited to 12 pages, including the abstract and excluding the references.

Literature Review: study that identifies, analyzes and synthesizes results of independent studies on a certain subject. Included in this category are: systematic review with and without meta-analysis, integrative review and scoping review. Its length is limited to 20 pages, including the abstract, tables, pictures and references.

Letter to the Editor: brief text aimed at promoting intellectual discussion on a given article recently published in the journal (up to 90 days). It is published at the exclusive criterion of the Editorial Board, with the corresponding response when pertinent.

Publication guidelines and prior registrations
Texto & Contexto Enfermagem supports the clinical trial registration policies of the World Health Organization (WHO) and the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE), recognizing the importance of these initiatives for the international registration and dissemination of information on clinical trials in open access. Therefore, only clinical research manuscripts that have received an identification number in one of the Clinical Trial Registries validated by the criteria established by WHO and ICMJE, and whose addresses are available on the ICMJE website, will be accepted for publication. The identification number should be recorded at the end of the abstract.

Randomized controlled trials, Systematic reviews, Meta-analyzes, Observational studies in epidemiology may be registered at:

Texto & Contexto Enfermagem recommends the prospective recording of the systematic review protocol in a recognized database (such as PROSPERO, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, Open Science Framework, and Research Registry). The main items of the review protocol are recorded and maintained permanently. Systematic reviews must be recorded at the beginning (i.e., in the protocol development phase) to help avoid unplanned duplication of studies and to allow for the comparison of the published review methods with what was previously planned in the protocol.

Texto & Contexto Enfermagem advocates initiatives aimed at improving the presentation of results of scientific studies by encouraging authors to use international guidelines in the preparation of articles of randomized clinical trials, systematic reviews, meta-analyzes, observational studies in epidemiology and qualitative studies. International guides are composed of checklist and flowcharts published in international declarations. Its use in preparing the manuscript may increase the potential for publication and, once published, increase the use of the reference in subsequent research.

Researches/Trials

Translation studies and instrument validation studies
In the English and Spanish versions, translation studies and instrument validation studies should preserve the instrument items in Portuguese, the language in which the study was carried out.

Authors

The concept of authorship adopted by Texto & Contexto Enfermagem is guided by the substantial contribution of each of the individuals listed as an author, which concerns, above all, the design and planning of the research project, the obtaining or analysis and interpretation of the data, the writing and critical review. The number of authors is limited to eight. The possibility of including more authors in multicentric studies will be examined by considering the pertinence of the justifications presented.
The inclusion of the names of authors whose contribution is in disagreement with the above criteria is not justified and may, in this such case, they can be included in the Acknowledgments. The request to inclusion of new authors after the submission process has been initiated must be duly justified and agreed upon by all the authors.

Financial relationships such as employment, consultations, possession of shares, fees, testimony or expert opinion are more easily identifiable conflicts of interest and have a greater chance of undermining the credibility of the journal, authors and science itself. However, conflicts may occur for other reasons, such as personal relationships, academic competition, and intellectual passion.
Authors are responsible for acknowledging and disclosing conflicts of interest that may influence their work, and should report them. In individual statements during the manuscript submission process on ScholarOne system. It includes all type of data, to what they have said during a study, interview or a focus groups as well as to any photograph that may be taken.

The manuscripts should aim at including representative human populations (gender, age and ethnicity) according to these recommendations. The terms sex and gender must be used properly. For original articles resulting from research conducted in Brazil, they should comply with the Resolution No. 466, of December 12, 2012, and Resolution No 516, of July 03, 2016 of the National Health Council. When dealing with research results, authors must attach a copy of the approval issued by the Research Ethics Committee and mention the project approval number by the Committee in the title page and, for Brazilian manuscripts, the Certificate of Presentation for Ethical Consideration (CAAE). It is not necessary to include the Resolution as a reference of the manuscript.
In order to ensure that the manuscripts submitted by members of Texto & Contexto Editorial Board are reviewed without bias, they undergo a blind evaluation by the editors on the ScholarOne system. Likewise, manuscripts by authors linked to UFSC are sent to the external reviewers for a blind and bias-free evaluation.

Process for the identification and treatment of research misconduct allegations

First subtitle = Routes followed
Second subtitle = The cure through prayer

Illustrations
Tables, charts and figures should be numbered consecutively with Arabic numerals, in the order they are cited in the text, being limited to five in a set. Configured in the same text font, with single spacing between lines, bold only in the header, upper box only at the beginning of the variable, except tables and charts, all other illustrations should be designated as figures.

Tables
Tables should be displayed according to the Standards for Table Presentation of the Brazilian Institute for Geography and Statistics Foundation (IBGE), available from: http://biblioteca.ibge.gov.br/visualizacao/livros/liv23907.pdf
  • must present numerical data as central information;
  • informative, concise and clear title, containing “what”, “from whom”, city, acronym of the state, country, year of data collection, followed by a full stop. Next, the size of the study sample should be displayed between parentheses, preceded by the letter N.
  • example: Table 1 – Distribution of female victims of domestic violence according to age, color, marital status and education. Salvador, BA, Brazil, 2014. (N=209)
  • the data should be separated correctly using lines and columns, so that each piece of information is displayed in one cell;
  • gridlines only below and above the heading and at the bottom of the table. No gridlines at the sides of the table;
  • not allowed: line breaks using Enter, indents using Tab, spaces to separate the data, underlines, markers from Microsoft® Office Word and colored cells;
  • avoid long tables, extending over more than one page;
  • short tables should be converted into text;
  • Explanatory notes should be placed at the bottom of the table, using the symbols in the sequence: *, †, ‡, §, ||, ¶, **, ††, ‡‡.
  • legends should be located after the bottom line of the table, restricted to a minimum, without using bold, displaying the term in capital letters, separated from the descriptors by a colon (e.g.: VCM: volume corpuscular médio). Between the legends, a semicolon should be used. Font Arial, size 10.
  • the statistical test used should be mentioned in the legend;
  • Title results should not be displayed in the body of the table, but in the heading, using %, n, average, median, p-value, among others;
  • cite the source in a footnote to the table, below the legend (if any) or below the bottom line of the table. E.g.: Source: DATASUS12.
Charts
They should present the information in discursive form and should be displayed as follows:
  • informative, concise and clear title, expressing the content and located at the top part of the picture;
  • differs from the tables mainly because they contain textual data, are closed at the sides and gridlines;
  • avoid long tables extending over more than one page;
  • when the picture was taken from another authorship, the source should be cited in a footnote. If any legend is included, use the same format as in the tables and place the legend before the source of the picture, on a different line.
Figures: should not repeat the data shown in texts or tables. In addition to being included in the text, they should be sent separately and in necessary quality for publication. If they are extracted from another source, published or unpublished, the authors must send written permission for their use. They must contain a legend, and when necessary a source, when it is extracted from published work, which must be included in the references.
  • Informative, concise and clear title, expressing the content and located at the bottom part;
  • Should be completely readable, clear and self-explanatory;
  • Several graphs in a single figure will only be accepted if the joint display is fundamental to interpret the figure;
  • should be displayed in high resolution (minimum 300 dpi) and be fully readable and clear;
  • black-and-white or colored;
  • photographs of people should be treated to impede identification;
  • if the photograph is protected by copyright, a letter authorizing publication should be provided;
  • Photographs should be mentioned in the same form as the tables and the title follows the same orientations as for the pictures.

Citations in the text

Indirect citations should contain the number of the reference they were taken from, esxluding the name of the author. The punctuation (point, comma or semicolon) should appear after the number in superscript, without any space between the final stop and the citation number. Example: the workers also use non-verbal language7.
When the citations from two or more authors are presented sequentially in the reference (for example, 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5), superscript should be used, separated by a hyphen. Example: established the principles of good administration, adopting the classical view of the manager’s functions1-5.

Direct citations (textual transcription) should be displayed in the body of the text between inverted commas, indicating the reference number and citation page, independently of the number of lines. Example: [...] “the West emerged in front of us like this infernal machine that crushes men and cultures for unwise purposes”1:30-31.

Verbatim citations from qualitative research are displayed in italics, in the body of the text, identifying authorship between parentheses and respecting anonymity. The identification of authorships should be displayed without italics. Example: [...] involving students and professionals more in social projects, getting to know the community problems more (e7).

Footnotes: the text should contain three footnotes at most, indicated by: * first note, ** second note, *** third note.

References
The references should be consecutively numbered in the order in which they appear in the text for the first time, in accordance with the Uniform Requisites of the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors - ICMJE. Journal titles should be abbreviated according to the List of Journals Indexed in Index Medicus.

The number of references in the manuscripts is limited to 30, except in Literature Review articles.
Special attention is needed to: recent references (preferably from the last five years); priority of references to articles published in scientific journals; citations in English of references available online in that language; restrict the use of references the reader cannot recover in the original version and/or whose scientific impact cannot be measures (dissertations, theses, course conclusion monographs, handouts, annals, decrees and official publications) or works of limited scientific expression.
All references should be displayed correct and completely. The author(s) is(are) fully responsible for the veracity of the information in the reference list.
In case any bibliographic reference management software is used (e.g.: EndNote), the authors should convert the references into text.

Gray literature: citations of unconventional, non-indexed, non-indexed, non-ISBNs, ISSN, ISAN or DOI publications should be avoided (theses, dissertations, course papers, handouts, official publications).
Manuscripts extracted from theses, dissertations and TCCS should not cite the original work in the references. This information should be entered on the identification page.

Note: Unpublished works should not be included in the references but inserted in a footnote. For other examples of references, see: http://www.nlm.nih.gov/bsd/uniform_requirements.html. For abbreviations of titles of periodicals in Portuguese, consult: https://ccn.ibict.br/busca.jsf.

Errata: after article publication, if the authors identify the need for an erratum, they should send it immediately to the Journal's Secretariat by e-mail.
