SUMMARY
A virus disease of soybeans closely resembling bud bligh has been recorded from several areas in the state of São Paulo. Studies on the cause of bud blight in these areas revealed that the virus responsible for the disease is the same that causes "necrose branca" or "couve" of tobacco in Brazil, a disease that has been referred to as Brazilian tobacco streak. This virus also causes mosaic of cotton, and infects many other cultivated plants and weeds.
Previous studies have indicated that the virus responsible for soja bud blight in Brazil is closer to American tobacco streak virus than to tobacco ring spot virus, being considered a strain of the former complex.
It is suggested that besides tobacco ring spot virus, tobacco streak virus also might the responsible for cases of soja bud blight in the United States.
