SUMMARY
A type of yellowing of the distal end of peanut leaflets, sometimes accompained by necrosis, was found to be widespread in plantings made early in 1960 at the Main Agr. Exp. Sta. of the Instituto Agronômico, Campinas. A relatively high population of the bean leafhopper, Empoasca fabae Harris was present on the plants.
Mechanical transmission tests made on the assumption that the leaflet yellow spots could be due to a virus gave negative results. Transmission tests with Empoasca fabae also gave negative results, but further experiments showed that the yellowing symptoms resulted from a toxicogenic action of this insect.
Chemical analysis of normal and yellow leaflet samples showed that the affected leaves were deficient in several elements. Manganese content in them was about half as much as that in normal leaves.
It is pointed out that symptoms of manganese deficiency as described in the literature resemble those resulting from leafhopper injury, and this is another instance in which the results from leaf analysis would not necessarily indicate that an element deficient in the leaves was lacking in the soil.
