SUMMARY
An experiment aimed to study the effect of root-knot nematode infestation (Meloidogyne exigua Goeldi) on the growth and yield of the coffee plant is being carried out at the Ribeirão Prêto Agr. Exp. Sta.
Two treatments are being compared: (1) infested seedlings and (2) non-infested controls. The experiment was laid out in randomized blocks with five replications of ten individual plante per plot.
The plants had not reached the bearing stage one year after transplanting, but height measurements showed that the non-infested controls grew an average of 54.7 cm whereas the plants that had been infested with the nematode grew only 37.5 cm. This difference in growth was found to be highly significant.
The detrimental effect of the nematode infestation on growth after the first year in the field was the only difference noted between the treatments. This is to be atribuled to the fact that all plants in the experiment have been heavily fertilized.
