SUMMARY
A study was made on the distribution of the root system of two rami varieties (Boehmerla nivea Gaud.), namely Murakami and E 49-63, in Latossolic B (terra roxa) soil at Campinas, State of São Paulo.
In one year old plants, the roots of Murakami reached a depth of 1.30m while in the variety E 49-63 reached 1.00m.
About eighty seven percent of the roots were found in the upper 10 cm layer of the soil for the Murakami variety, and eighty one percent for the E 49-63 variety.
The Murakami presented an average of 60.3g of roots per plant and the E 49-63, 40.4g.
The greater depth reached and the greater quantity of roots presented by the Murakami might be responsible for the greater resistance for drought of this variety.
Considering that almost the total roots were found in the upper 10 cm layer of the soil, principally the weeding control and the fertilizing practices must be done carefully.
