Selenium determination in soil samples

SUMMARY
A suspicion that cases of selenium poisoning might be occurring among farm animals in São Paulo led the authors to survey the soils of the state for this element.
During the course of soil sample analysis, the need was felt to introduce a few modifications in the current selenium testing method. Also a filtration apparatus was devised that greatly facilitated the work.
Of three types of soil that have been tested so far, no selenium was found in "arenito de Bauru"; 0.1 p.p.m was present in a sample of "terra roxa"; and from 0.6 to 0.8 p.p.m. was found in soil samples of the glacial type.
