Neste trabalho são descritas comparativamente quatro variedades do amendoim cultivado (Arachis hypogaea L.), a saber: Roxo, Tatu, "Spanish 2B" e NC4. A variedade NC4 já era previamente conhecida como pertencendo ao tipo Virgínia. Foram escolhidos alguns característicos botânicos que podem facilmente identificá-las, como ramificação, distribuição das gemas vegetativas e floríferas, tipos de frutos e de sementes; como característicos econômicos estudamos apenas o rendimento, que corresponde ao que os autores norte-americanos chamam de "shelling percentage", e a porcentagem de granação. Conhecidos êsses característicos, foi possível separar as variedades pelo tipo vegetativo a que pertencem, isto é, a Roxo e a Tatu, ao tipo Valência, a "Spanish 2B", ao tipo "Spanish" e a NC4, ao tipo Virgínia.
The botanical and economical characteristics of four peanut varieties (Arachis hypogaea L.) are described. This study involved the following determinations: plant habit,, branching system, weight of fruit and seed, classification of the frujt as to segmentation, shelling percentage and percentage of filled segments. The data obtained permitted the inclusion of these varieties into one of the three known vegetative types of peanut plants: Valencia, Spanish and Virginia. The variety NC4, introduced from the U.S.A. in 1952 and known to be of the Virginia type was used for comparison. The varieties Roxo and Tatu were found to belong to the Valencia type, and the var. Spanish 2B to the Spanish type.
