Leaching of potassium and phosphorus in "terra-roxa-legítima" and "arenito bauru" soils

SUMMARY
Exchangeable potassium and soluble phosphorus were determined at different depths in each of the places where superphosphate and potassium chloride had been applied 1, 2, and 3 years before in "terra-roxa-legítima" soil and 1, 2, 3, and 4 years before in "arenito Bauru" soil. The fertilizers were applied in furrows 10-20 cm deep at the rate of 450 g of superphosphate and 180 g of chloride per meter.
It was found that one year after the application a large amount of the potassium had moved to the maximum depth studied which was 1 m in the "terra-roxa-legítima" and 0.80 m in the "arenito Bauru". Small amounts of potassium were found at those depths under the places that hod received the fertilizer 3 ond 4 years before, showing that most of this element had already bean leached out to deeper soil layers.
No increase in the phosphorus content of the soil was noticed below 20 cm in the "terra-roxa-legítima" and 40 cm in the "arenito Bauru" showing that all the phosphorus applied was firmly held by the upper layers of soil.
