The influence of storage conditions on the viability of tomato seed
Oswaldo Bacchi
SUMMARY
The viability of tomato seeds kept under different storage conditions was studied during a period of 48 months.
Based on the experimental results presented in this note, the following conclusions were drawn:
1) complete viability at the end of 48 months was obtained for seeds stored at room temperature and at relative humidities up to 30%;
2) at the same temperature the longevity of the seeds decreased with increasing relative humidity in such way that the germination of the seeds kept at 80% of relative íiumidity was reduced to 58% and 5% after 4 and 16 months, respectively;
3) at the end of the experiments there was no loss of viability in seed* containing 5.2%, 6.6% and 8.0% of moisture and stored in sealed glass tubes at 10°C;
4) the longevity of the seeds stored in airtight containers at room temperature was maintained equally well except in the case of the seeds with 8.0% of moisture content, which germinated only 44% after 48 months.
