SUMMARY
An experiment was carried out with a new vine killer of Irish potato, i.e., the thiocyano-1 dimethylamino-4 benzeno (TDB), which is presented at the trade under the form of an emulsion at the proportion of 250 g per litre.
Four doses were used at the following rates: 0.5%, 1.0%, 1.5% and 2.00%. For comparison was used the dinitro-ortho-sec.-butyl-phenol 55% mixed with water at 2.0%.
The results obtained proved TDB to be efficient as vine killer of Irish potato at the rates of 1.5% and 2.0%, drying the aerial part entirely and making harvest possible about 12 to 14 days after its application. However, at the rate of 2.0%, a similar fact occurred as already noted with the dinitro-ortho-sec.-butyl-phenol, namely, the vascular region darkened, a condition that forbids its application at such a rate. The dinitro-ortho-sec.-butyl-phenol, which had already been tested, was of great efficiency, but - in view of the darkening of the vascular tissue, same as happens with TDB - should not be used except at the rate of 1.5%. No observations have been made about the residual effect on the tubers and in the soil.
